A review, post or comment can reach a very wide audience within hours. Protecting reputation must nevertheless be balanced against freedom of expression and the right to criticise.
Facts, opinions and context
The distinction between a statement of fact and a personal assessment is a starting point, but it is not the whole analysis. Relevance, language, the factual basis and context all matter.
Even legitimate criticism may become harmful when it loses any connection with the issue under discussion and becomes a personal attack.
Responding proportionately
Before taking action, it is useful to preserve evidence, measure dissemination and assess the most suitable remedy: correction, engagement with the platform, a formal notice or court proceedings.
A timely and proportionate response better protects the individual or business and reduces the risk of amplifying the disputed content.
